Heather symbolizes the perhaps most important step in the phase of the pilgrimage. The innocent and the orphaned are still very self-referential.

But before one can enter the stage of the warrior, it requires a fundamental change in perspective. No longer do you stand alone in the center of attention, but you learn that there are others with their own needs, desires and abilities.

You learn to turn to others, to listen to them, to experience the world from their point of view. That puts the injuries you suffered in the orphaned stage in perspective.
