Calendula for Children
Calendula - Calendula officinalis
Calendula acts on hearing, speaking and non-verbal communication. You can compare it to blackberry, which combines the color and shape information of the eye into a comprehensible image, while the Calendula reveals a comprehensible sound from the totality of noises.
In the creation story, the acoustics come first. God said: Let there be light, so first came the sound wave, then the light wave. It is the same story in human history. Before a child in the womb can learn about vision, sound waves can already reach it.
Calendula has a special energy that promotes fine listening, it finetunes the bhearing so to speak. This energy seems to harmonize well with the entire field of acoustics, thus also with the production of noises, in communication mostly as words but not always. Hearing itself works through this fine membrane, called the eardrum. When sound waves reach the eardrum, the acoustic vibration is transformed into a mechanical vibration that triggers further processes. Ossicle moves ossicle to bridge the middle ear until at the other end another membrane in the inner ear is set in vibration. This in turn causes a wave in the liquid-filled cochlea.
The really amazing thing is that the cochlea uses the wave as „keys“ for high or low tones. Deep sounds, ie slow waves, stimulate other nerve cells as high ones. Finally, their meaning is decoded, understood and possibly used by the brain to translate into a physical movement. Thus, a simple sound wave through the air over an extremely complicated sequence through all three aggregate states - gaseous, solid, liquid - can make a protein mass of say 70 kilos of weight rise from the sofa, just because this 70 kilos understand the sound sequence as „Get up“, recognize the imperative and put it into action. Unbelievable, is not it?! (If „Get up“ does not work, try „Free Beer“)
Sound waves reach the babies before birth, but not, as one might think, through the mother’s almost opaque abdominal wall, but over another multidimensional connection, as Alfred Tomatis, the explorer of prenatal communication, found out. The hearing of the mother also serves her child. From the mother’s ear, the sound is passed on via bone connections until it reaches the skin of the child by means of the iliac blades as a gentle pressure wave through the amniotic fluid. Through the same mechanism, only a little more directly, the words spoken by the pregnant woman herself are transmitted to the child. So it is hardly surprising that there are nerve cells in the skin for the sensation of vibration, which are similar to those of the cochlea in the inner ear. So we hear with the whole body, even if we are not (always) aware of it.
However, the sequence of sound wave processing does not work from the beginning (of life). At least at the last step a lot has to be learned, above all: a language. Only when you master it, you are able to decode the incoming sound waves. But that does not mean that they have no effect, because what resonates is more than just the information content. A barely conscious pressure wave also sets our skin in vibration.
In the left hemisphere sits the human language center and waits to be filled with words, images and meanings. We learn to speak by giving a name to what we see: that’s mom, that’s a ball, etc. Sound and image are associated with each other. Therefore, it is easy for us to make inner films out of the stories we hear. (In the case of impaired senses, a combined dose of blackberry and calendula is almost inevitable, even if there is no identifiable indication for one of the two flowers.)
Some people have to „translate“ in their mind what they have read into spoken language in order to understand it. They speak the written words inwardly, so they read much more slowly than others who do not first speak the abstract letter sequences, but immediately translate them into inner pictures.
Let’s summarize: Calendula supports and improves our hearing. It lets us recognize nuances and understand them holistically. Our perception becomes holistic.
But Calendual is also about speaking. Being able to express themselves clearly and unambiguously in a voice that underlines the statement and the attitudes behind it in harmony with the body language. Such congruence (agreement of meaning and expression) should actually be helpful in any communication.
Let’s take an example of failed communication: „I’ve told you a thousand times: clean up your room!“ Should you not ask yourself how it can happen that someone uses the same verbal request a thousand times without noticing that it does not work? The sound arrives in the right place and the eyes checking the result (the messed up room) report back: it did not work out again. There is no insight into the necessity of a changed strategy. Maybe the result would better if you tried it differently. It is important not to react, since that refers only to your anger, which in turn results from seeing the confusion in the nursery. It is much more primising to become aware of your intention, and strive for the best, quickest, and simplest way to its realization. „How many times have I told you ...“ is certainly not one of them.
From a different perspective, it is admirable to see how you can let certain sounds and sound sequences slide through you without a trace. Of course, it annoys the parents, but when we put this effect aside, we recognize a great ability. Just imagine how wonderful it would be to use it consciously, e.g. when the road in front of the house is torn open. But who says you can not do it?
In the course of an „ear training“ with the help of Calendula we can do more than we ever thought possible.
Calendula also affects our speech. And not only in the throat area, but also at its place of origin, where language in the brain has its center. Now, one must not misunderstand the effect of an essence in the sense that it has direct influence on an organ. The effect becomes understandable on our hearing and speaking through the emotional effect of the Calendula essence.
A brief digression into physiology must follow: in the center of the brain just above the elongated spinal cord, through which most of our nerve impulses pass, is the so-called ‚limbic system‘, which is responsible for processing our emotions. Almost all important nerve pathways pass through this area, e.g. the visual pathways from front to back, and the motor tracts from the outside to the center. All go through the invisible filter of our limbic system. This explains why you can already tell by body language whether someone is upset or anxious. The pure impulse of movement is modified by our feelings before being performed.
Letting go of our fears, inhibitions, whims and the other so often blocking feelings and replace them with deep understanding of ourselves and our environment, teaches to learn to communicate directly and openly on a level, which will save us a lot of trouble in the future where ambiguous communication, ulterior motives and misunderstandings will arise no longer.
Why is this one of the essences for children? It makes courageous and expressive, it teaches clarity and directness already at a time when communication is learned. Let’s give our children the advantage of being able to listen as well as express themselves excellently. Let’s help them concentrate on what’s important instead of becoming involved in misunderstandings.
