Essences from magical places are reminiscent of ancient spirituality

When we talk about multitasking in computers we mean they let us write an email, while downloading files and rendering videos at the same time.
Human beings cannot do that. There is a reason why texting is forbidden when driving a car. Taking the focus off the street increases the risk of accidents. So, how does what some people call „multitasking“ in humans work?
Learning depends on focus and repetition. Do the same thing again and again and it becomes automatic. The skill is delegated to the unconscious which frees up some „working memory“ in our conscious awareness. That is when you can turn your focus to other things. Now you can take a walk and whistle at the same time. But that is not multitasking. It is doing one thing consciously while doing the other thing unconsciously.
The unconscious is the place where the magic happens. If you were to see it as a central control, you could indeed locate multitasking there. But that is not it, rather is the unconscious about decentralized processes that are controlled in various places in the body. These processes regulate our temperature, heart beat, breathing, blood sugar and so on without bothering us by requiring our attention. If our sense of balance should be regulated consciously there would not be enough brain power to have a conscious conversation at the same time.
Our conscious awareness needs focus. Try to expand your focus too much and everything gets blurred. Instead of multitasking you start multifailing. So, yes you can work on something while humming to a song on the radio and chewing gum at the same time, but as soon as you concentrate on the chewing gum you loose the grip on the radio song.
Energy flows where the attention goes. That is the rule.
One thing at a time is best. Once I shared a flat with a friend who was a great telephone chatter. And he was a lover of Italian cafe latte which requires to boil and whisk milk. Oh, we had so many milk disasters in our kitchen when he was busy on the phone. When we do something we love – like chatting on the phone – we lose focus on other things. It is natural - and we can make use of it.
A couple of years ago someone gave me a software to create music. One can do really unusual stuff like making a reggae song with an accordeon. I lost myself playing around with it, and when I looked up it was already dark outside. I had „worked“ many hours without being aware of it.
A little later I discovered the work of Mihaily Csikszentmihalyi who calls this state of consciousness „flow state“. You get absorbed in what you do – that’s flow. You do not hear the telephone ring, you do not smell burnt milk, you are simply doing something you love to do. Your focus is narrowed. That is unitasking.
Brain scans show that many parts of the brain are on standby while the frontal lobe is highly active.
But there is more to it. The task you keep yourself busy with should not be too easy. In that case you loose your flow and get bored. It should also not be too difficult because that can frustrate you – and you loose your flow. The goal should be worthwhile. If you are not interested in eating the cake you will hardly get in the flow baking it.
Feedback should also be in reach. If the cake needs 57 years to get ready and only the next generation will be able to taste it you will find it hard to keep up your flow unless there is another motivator that keeps you going while you know you will not be able to see the result of your work.
And (last but not least but I do not want to dive into it too deeply here) what you do must be fun.
Take all these ingredients: focus, fun, challenge, clear goals, results – then you get into the flow.
Why is that important? It makes you happy. Imagine you sorted the contents of boxes on shelves the whole day long as you did yesterday and will do again tomorrow, you are exhausted and come home, how do you feel? No focus, no challenge, no fun, just one day like all the others and within short time you will be unable to tell what you did that very day. Nothing special, nothing worth remembering.
Now try to imagine you created a reggae song people will love to dance to or you baked a cake your grandmother will enjoy or wrote an article about an essence called „Flow“. That is a day you will remember. It was a happy day, a day that made life worth living.
I read a book written by Dolores Lachappelle, an American mountaineer, who I like to quote here (without being able to name the source exactly because I only got a German translation which I re-translated to English) since she describes the phenomenon of flow so beautifully:
“Then bliss came over me. It is extremely difficult to explain this to someone who is not a mountaineer. It is a state of complete relaxation, complete joy and indescribable gratitude that the mountain grants you this - so graceful and beautiful to descend the vertical rock, and it always gives you something to hold on to while you climb. It’s like being „completely at home“, completely at home like nowhere else. (...) It’s total relaxation.“
Many years later I discovered Encyclia vespa, an orchid from central America, and called it
This orchid invites you to glide through life, to stay in the flow, to use the forces around you, to bend but not to break, to follow your inner compass like a dream, to stand by yourself and assert yourself in a gentle and natural way.
This flower is not just about life in the moment, but also about the rhythm of your own life, the inner knowledge of when it is natural and right to initiate a change, to adapt to the ups and downs instead to fight against them. To give up the inner resistance to what is supposed to happen, instead actively participate in its creation. Stay in the flow. Don’t despair, don’t complain, but recognize and seize opportunities and possibilities.
Flow describes a euphoric to ecstatic experience, an absorption in what you do. It feels like flying, even when you sit. Or stand or run or turn screws.
Discover this orchid essence and it will help you discover how amazing life can be when you do not multitask but get in the flow of life.
