However own one‘s nature is not identical with one‘s appearance or emotions. One important part of being human has often been ignored by flower essence therapists, but when we start accept the existence of the nervous system and be aware of its rules we can even be better and gain better results. And we do not have to necessarily become physicians. The nervous system works in its special way and knowing about some of its simple patterns can make our work more successfull.
One of our nervous system‘s ‚special features‘ is how it turns off what does not change. Enter a room with a lack of fresh air you will first react negatively and demand to open the windows. After a while however you will hardly be aware of the bad air. Things that do not change leave our consciousness. You may compare this phenomen to a spotlight that always turns to the exciting things and leaves the rest in the dark.
Our nervous system switches to stand-by as soon as our conscious mind looses interest. As soon as something happens, be it a knock on the door or the smell of a zigarette, it returns from its ‚sleeping state‘. It shouts out New-New-New and catches our full attention. Only a couple of moments later the originally new sensation may already be regarded as boring and the nervous system goes back to stand-by again.
Everything new seems to be remarkable, everything old neglectable.
However when changes occur internally, the system works differently. Everything new is considered te be strange and unfamiliar, not trustworthy. The system tries to keep us on track, no matter how much it costs. This is especially true when we talk about behaviour patterns. Most of the right-handed people for example start brushing their teeth on the left side. That is quite natural for them. Now, if you are right-handed, why not try it on the right side tonight. What haveyou got to lose? And the left-handed ones could try it on the left hand side. Find out how it feels to do something differently. You cannot make anything wrong. But yet it feels so.
You see first it takes some time to establish a certain behaviour pattern, but then it is hard to get rid of it. Once established and accepted patterns react like jealous little brothers or sisters, they do what they can to push the new one away. However their endurance is not lifelong. Usually it takes 3 weeks to change a behaviour pattern.
Automatic response to anything is a wonderful feature of being human. This mechanism help us to concentrate on what is really important. Imagine you would have to decide every time what you are going to do right after waking up in your bed. Stretch first? But whichmuscle? Or open your eyes first? Yawn? How did yawing work again? Open your mouth, ok, but which muscles are involved? And breathing out at the very same time? How can I coorodinate so many things at the same time?
Isn‘t great just to take your bicycle and go, instead of having to adjust your sense of balance first. I love it.
However once we need to change some of our routines it may become a little difficult. Have you ever noticed how often people wearing contact lenses try to to adjust their glasses? At least the ones who are new to wearing lenses.
Many of us are willing to change old limiting behaviour patterns with the help of flower essences, however these patterns seem to be very strong and resistant. Remember how our nervous system works. It needs something new. On a regular basis. Surprises are not just fun, they are necessary to keep our attention and focus. Once your partner stops surprising you, you will unwillingly start to ignore him or her. And vice versa, of course. You will become like the stale air in a room with closed windows. First noticed as something not really good, later simply unnoticed at all. Staying the same forever makes failure of relationships inevitable.
So it certainly is recommendable to regularly take conscious breaks from any pattern. You need to fill the consciously created gaps in the pattern with something interesting, something unexpected, something new. Feed your nervous system. Give it something to focus on instead of telling yourself that you are too rigid, too dumb, too weak for a positive change. Everything that is regularly done in the very same way becomes a pattern, a force of its own, that cannot easily be changed just by wanting to. To break a pattern you need to do something spectacular, something strange, unfamiliar, something that makes your nervous system curious so to say. So why not make it a pattern to change regularly?
To keep things alive and noticeable we need to change them constantly. In order to get rid of behaviour patterns we have to confront them with changes - but: we also need to see the aspect of commitment to them. Behaviour patterns serve us in our everyday life, they make so many things much much easier for us. To express it in a cynical way: some people have developed the pattern to ignore their husband or wife, which may even be positive for them. They, who do not change, are simply being ignored, no fights, no killings.
Anyway the title of this month‘s blogpost is ‚Patterns, Good-byes and Nervous System‘. I do not mean the good-bye to former lovers and later ignored bad smelling air, but the farewell to good old, but limiting habits.
You should know that every good bye is painfull - even the good bye to things or persons we do not like. Of course I like to quit smoking - but wasn‘t great to share a cigarette with a colleague after the boss had one of his outbursts, were there not sunsets we watched with a cigarette in our hands, so many good memories are attached to smoking! Once you decided to quit they enter your mind and whipe out all memories of coughs, headaches and doctors‘ diagnosises. You miss smoking before you throw away the last package.
What a strange phenomenon! Attachment to what we do not like!
However if you want to prevent getting used to anything you need constant changes, phantasy, motivation, awareness. With other words: you may need Apple or Hornbeam, Cherry is good, too.
And do not underestimate the wrench! Good old times sometimes need to be wiped out - especially when they were not good at all. The good old Bach flower Honeysuckle is the right one for this. By the way this is one of the main essences in the tretament of drug addiction!
