Small introduction to the area of shamanic essences
Spring Cleaning of the Soul
Last three months did not really fullfill the definition of what a winter is supposed to be, anyway people enjoy the first sunrays in Spring like an inner liberation.
Traditionally this is the time of the year for the spring cleaning. Literally meant. On the physical level Christians do it internally by fasting before Easter, and we know other people and cultures have similar rituals like the East-Asian Senoi who do not eat for quite a while in springtime. Their way of inner cleansing is meant to improve access to dreams.
So we do not only clean our bodies, but our souls as well. And take a look on the spiritual side: was it not spring, that Jesus returned from the dead, renewed and enlightened? Buddha, too, received his insight in Spring.
Throwing of old burdens, cleaning our soul‘s house, the body, cleaning our thoughts and minds in order to take the giant step to feeling like newborn in spring, the physical and the spiritual seem to be involved. Spring has always been more than just a season. People in Japan celebrate the Cherry blossoms. Perhaps we do not have as many of them over here, however the enjoyment of refreshed energy and renewed colours in nature may have the same effect on people outside Japan.
By the way: what about energy in spring?
Should it work so differently? I always find analogies inspiring (I have always believed there is more in our world than just cause and effect) and obvious. Why should our energetic system be the only one that ignores the natural rhythm of renewal in spring?
Indeed we have been fighting winter for such a long time. Although electricity prevents us from having to sit in the dark in the afternoon in winter, it seems as if our energy system still works in the old rhythm and lowers its activity, which we use to ignore. We head towards our offices around 8am be it dark outside or not. Our houses‘ central heating systems pretend there were 20 degrees all year long. We receive fresh fruit and vegetable from abroad, which are unavailable in our grades and so do everything to make us think there was no winter at all. We do no longer adapt to them, we fight the seasons.
It is my theorie that ignoring the natural rhythms challenges our physical, energetical and emotional systems. Of course I know returning to the stone age and living in cages can not be the solution, but yet I dare to say that making everything comfortable may cause some internal disharmony, which in turn may lead to illness. Our immunesystem seems to need a challenge every now and then. And if we do not provide any, it surfs to the training camp, where they train how to kill dangerous Hazel pollen and poisonous strawberries. Or let me put it this way: avoiding all kinds of physical challenges can lead to allergies.
So what about an energetical spring cleaning? Meridians and Chakras, although invisible to the eye, serve best without overload of old negative energies. This can clear our emotions, too, and make us ready for a spring, that should not find us lethargical, tired and lacking interest, when spring sends its flowers to seduce us to get out and dance.
Fortunately we have got some flower remedies that can help us with the spring cleansing and help us really enjoy this time of the year.
Snowdrop - Galanthus nivalis
You cannot be surprised, could you?
Well, Snowdrop is the starter essence for the spring cleaning. Usually it is used to overcome depressions, but there is more to it than just this single indication.
Snowdrop‘s signature leads us directly to its essence‘s effects: the flowers break even through a layer of snow, they often are the first messengers of spring. Compare this to picking yourself up...
If you take the word „depression“ literally you get de = down and pression = pressure. A depressed person usually does not get up alone, his kind of suffering keeps him down on the ground. Unless he tries Snowdrop (or a similar working essence)...
Consequently you can notice a lack of motivation to move. Depressed people feel so heavy and unable to get up. They always look down to the ground, the „world above“ seems not to be meant for them. They are not part of this world, where people stand, walk, act. Depressed people however stay where they are. The world above seems unreachable. However this is just a belief that accompagnies the depression. As long as you have two healthy legs and arms and a back that is not broken, you can stand up. The belief that you cannot is merely a bad trick of the depression to keep you in this state.
For this reason depressed people need to move. They simply have to get up again, move, run, exercise, dance, do whatever they want to: just move! One of the reasons is the broader perspective you gain by standing upright. It makes it easier to see the whole picture, not only the part that can be seen around your feet. New perspective brings new possibilities, new opportunities, new ways out of the misery.
That is the way Snowdrop essence works: it helps you to get up again, unregarded how long you have been lying on the ground. It makes you strong, self-conscious and enduring.
When there is a constant state of winter in your soul, Snowdrop is the plant that sends its flowers as first sign of coming spring. It is the essence for those who are exhausted, hopeless, perhaps apathetic, who have made way for the eternal inner winter.
The frozen soul, the lack of zest for life, of power and energy, of fun and joy, is a soul in need. Snowdrop brings new interest in life, it strengthens the will to take the challenge. Courage, optimism and joy of life are the major keywords. And the best start of a spring cleaning that involves mind, emotions and soul.
Stinging Nettle - Urtica dioica
This herb has been used for inner cleansing for such a long time. Stinging Nettle tea helps to remove toxins, cleanses the kidneys and works anti-inflammatory.
The essence works kind of similarly on the emotional level, especially when it come to removing emotional toxins.
Winter is the time of limited space, we usually stay in our warm houses instead of the cold and darkness of nature, and this can cause trouble. Family life creates tension, conflicts arise and it is no surprise, that this often reaches its peak with an outburst of anger and fighting right around Christmas, which originally was meant to be a day of love and peace. It is just like that: when Uncle Ernie farts in his own bed, I do not care - if he does it in my living room, that is something else. But now there is no escape, winter keeps us sticking together and creates a toxic biosphere.
Stinging Nettle is the essence that cleanses out toxins from our relationships. It can best be used in a diffuser - in case all involved agree - so that it can spread its energy through the air.
How many of our relationship conflicts are based upon failed communication resp.
- not speaking out what we really need and later being disappointed that we do not get it;
- not telling the partner something important because it may hurt him, and so instead swallowing it up until it burns our stomach;
- not defining one‘s borders: don‘t go any further;
- not being aware of the others‘ borders;
- acting out of a certain expectation of the partner‘s reaction, which only exists in your mind;
to cut it short: a lack of courage, honesty, authenticity, because one does not want to take risks in a relationship and tries to avoid confrontation.
Stinging Nettle is the healer of conflicts in families, relationship and groups. It wipes out thought and feelings of revenge and hatred and enable us to take a closer look on what really went wrong. Some things hoewever cannot be fixed, in this case Stinging Nettle helps to split up without disturbing emotions that only would cause further damage and hurts. The inner poisoning makes us do stupid, even ugly things we do not mean, but are merely expressions of our own inner turmoil. This poison needs an antidote called Stinging Nettle. It calms us down, clears the emotions and attitudes and helps with cleaning up the heap of ruins. And perhaps we can be friends again.
Self- Heal - Prunella vulgaris
This is an amazing flower essence. Self- Heal is the most universally (ok, one of the most universally) usable essences and one of the most often used, too.
As herbal remedie Self- Heal was used because of its healing effects on sour throats (in German formerly called ‚Halsbräune‘ = brown throat, hence the brown = braun in the plant‘s name) and other infections of the respiratory tract. It was also called Zimmermannskraut (carpenter‘s herb), since it was used to stop the bleedings of carpenters‘ injuries. The English name however says it all: Self-Heal.
In the first place the essence is a cleansing one. The first to prepare a Self-Heal essence was the Californian FES. They noticed that their Self-Heal essence supports fasting, it helps to eliminate toxins and waste products and at the same time make better use of the minerals from the drinking water.
Self- Heal can also be applied topically. The internal use it recommended in times of complete exhaustion, chronic disease, failure of the immune system, when you feel constantly tired and heavy. When you are prone to infections, also to allergies, you may try this essence.
On the emotional level Self- Heal brings us insight in the cause of the illness and beyond that: in the profit it brings us. An inner need to be noticed and cared for e.g. can make you feel better when you are sick than when you are in good health.
Self-Heal frees from dependency - or at least helps with it. It motivats us to get well again. Even if you should feel you do not deserve to feel good and enjoy life. The Self- Heal affirmation, you may want to use is: I deserve to be healthy.
And in case the inner saboteur comes up with a cynical objection - I am ready to recognize that I deserve to be healthy.
